About the queen of lakes in Nepal - Rara Lake

At an altitude of 2,990 m/9,810 ft above sea level, tucked in the remote northwestern region of the country, Rara Lake is the largest freshwater lake in Nepal. One of the hidden gems that is known only to a few, spread over an area of 10.8 square kilometers, it is the main highlight of the Rara Lake Jumla Tour. The lake is visually stunning and ecologically significant, as well as holding cultural and religious importance.

Though not as popular as some of the turquoise alpine lakes in Nepal, such as Gokyo Lakes in the Everest region and Tilicho Lake in the Annapurna Himalayas, Rara is believed to be home to mystical deities and spirits, and it also receives thousands of local pilgrims for making offerings and praying. The crystal-clear water mirrors the surrounding snow-capped peaks; even its setting is rich in spiritual energy.

Who are the locals of the Karnali Region around Rara Lake?

The Rara Lake Jumla overland tour includes stopping by traditional Nepalese villages to reach the primary destination, Rara Lake. Kohalpur, Surkhet, Kalikot, Ramkam, and Butwal—most of these in the Karnali Region—are untouched and unexplored and feature habitats of Khas and Chhetris predominantly. Most of them are still dependent on agriculture and animal husbandry for a living.

Their adaptation to the harsh mountainous environment is truly admirable, struggling for even quality health facilities, but still happy to welcome guests and visitors. The genuine hospitality awaits you, and so do the unique culture, customs, and traditions of living in the area. If your tour time coincides with local festivals, you may even get to participate in the celebration, an insider insight.
