General mountain driving safety and conditions
Preparation:
Checking the road conditions before you leave is essential.
Ensure your vehicle is ready for the road conditions. At high altitudes, engines can lose power, so stay aware of your vehicle’s limitations.
Driving practices:
Drive at a conservative speed and make up your mind to stop quickly.
Avoid sudden brakes and changes in direction.
Turn your headlights on to increase visibility.
Maintain a safe distance from other drivers.
Be aware of your surroundings and potential hazards like soft shoulders, “soft shoulders,” or rocks.
Parking and hills:
When parked, curb your wheels to prevent the car from rolling.
Turn the wheels left when uphill and right when downhill.
When driving uphill, use the highest gear that allows you to comfortably pull. Approach the hill straight on to avoid rolling.
Turning your 4x4 on a steep slope is a big no-no.
Always have an escape route in mind in case of an emergency.
